Regulation of the Private Security Sector in Africa. ISS and IDRC |
The ISS and the IDRC are responsible for this project
The past decade has seen rapid growth in the private security industry, both in Africa and globally. Private security companies have diversified their activities to include military advice and training, arms procurement and intelligence gathering, among others. As a result many Africa governments have engaged the services of internationally –operating companies. The presence of these organizations in Africa has raised questions related to accountability and democratic oversight of the defense sector, the extent to which governments, the United Nations and relief agencies are outsourcing key ‘state’ functions and the influence that these companies gain in the process.

The Kwazulu Natal Campaign against Torture based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal |
In a society presently dominated by a culture of violence, CAT KZN aims to help establish a human rights culture as enshrined in the SA Constitution (andthe Bill of Rights), and supported by Chapter Nine Institutions in South Africa.
Working to eradicate torture and abusive practices of interrogation; Creating awareness of the existence of torture (by sharing our experiences); Creating awareness of the Optional Protocol,especially in KZN; and Lobbying the South African Government to ratify the Optional Protocol.

The Southern Africa Human Rights NGO Network (SAHRINGON) |
The Southern Africa Human Rights NGOs Network (SAHRINGON) was established in February 1997 at the Regional Human Rights Network Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Regional Training Needs and Planning Workshop was a continuation of the SAHRINGON campaign that started in 1998. This campaign was based on the recognition that police brutality was a manifestation of torture in the region and a threat to such rights as life, dignity, liberty and non-discrimination.
